Native, low-growing plant with large, glossy, heart-shaped leaves for deep shade. Asarum caudatum (British Columbia wild ginger, western wild ginger, or long-tailed wild ginger) is a plant native to rich moist forests of western North America. It has heart-shaped leaves and a three-lobed purplish flower.

Soil & Sunlight

Sunlight: Thrives in partial shade to full, deep shade, making it an ideal, evergreen groundcover for woodland gardens. It requires protection from hot, direct afternoon sun, which can burn its leaves. It thrives in dappled light and, while shade-loving, can tolerate some morning sun.

Soil: Thrives in moist, well-drained, acidic to neutral soil that is rich in humus or organic matter. It flourishes in shady, woodland conditions, particularly beneath conifers, where the soil remains consistently damp. Ideal soil mimics the forest floor: loose, nutrient-rich, and high in humus.

Plant Size

Grows about 6" tall (great groundcover)./

Garden Design:

Wild Ginger (Asarum caudatum) is a premier, native evergreen groundcover for shady, moist landscapes, forming a lush, 6-inch tall carpet of heart-shaped leaves. Thriving in rich, well-drained soil under trees or in woodland gardens, it spreads via rhizomes to create dense mats that suppress weeds, making it ideal for shady spots and slopes.
