Soil & Sunlight

Sun: Most St. John's wort plants thrive in full sun but can also grow in partial shade, with some species tolerating more shade than others.

Soil: St. John's wort grows best in well-drained, sandy loam soil but is highly adaptable and can tolerate a wide variety of soil types, including clay and rocky soil. It thrives in soils with a pH between \(5.5\) and \(7.0\), but it is not fussy about pH and can grow in acidic, neutral, or alkaline conditions. A key requirement is good drainage to prevent root rot, which can occur in soggy soil.

Plant Size

Height: Typically grow 1–3 feet tall.

Spread: St. John's wort spreads through both seed and vegetative reproduction, making it an aggressive and fast-growing plant. It spreads by seeds dispersed by wind, water, animals, and humans, which can remain viable for many years. It also spreads through its root system, which can send out lateral roots to form new plants.
