Verbena (Verbena sp.)

Annual and perennial. Forms cluster heads with light purple flowers. It is known for its long-lasting, colorful flower clusters and is popular in gardens for borders, containers, and hanging baskets because it attracts wide variety of pollinators like butterflies and is tolerant of heat and drought. 

Notes: S everal verbena species are native to British Columbia, including the blue vervain ( Verbenahastata) and yellow sand verbena (Abronialati folia). Blue vervain can be found in wetland areas throughout the Lower Mainland, Southern Interior, and parts of Vancouver Island, while yellow sand verbena is native to sandy coastlines, including the Haida Gwaii islands. The pink sand-verbena (Abroniaumbellata) is also considered native, though it is more ephemeral.
