  • Partial Sun

Soil Type:

  • Well-Drained

A native North American perennial plant known for its tall, arching sprays of late-season golden-yellow flowers, which provide vital nectar for pollinators like bees and butterflies. It spreads aggressively via rhizomes and seeds, thriving in full sun and moist soil but tolerating various conditions. While sometimes considered a weed for its vigorous spread, it's valued in ecological restoration and pollinator gardens, has medicinal uses, and is even an invasive species in parts of Europe and Asia.

Soil & Sunlight

Sun: Full Sun preferred but can tolerate partial shade.

Soil: Well-drained soil, can adapt to various types including clay.

Plant Size

Height: 2 to 6 feet (0.6 to 1.8 meters) tall, though some can reach up to 7 feet (2.1 meters).

Spread: Canada Goldenrod spreads aggressively through both rhizomes (underground stems) and prolific self-seeding, allowing it to rapidly colonize areas and form dense colonies, sometimes even becoming an invasive species outside its native range. It can spread by seed via wind and by vegetative growth from its root system, requiring management in gardens to prevent it from taking over.

Garden Design:

Plant goldenrod in large groups or drifts to highlight its vibrant yellow color and create an impressive display. Ideal for naturalized settings where its spreading nature can create a wild, bountiful look. Use in large borders, mixed with other natives, or at the back of perennial beds to frame other plants.

Bloom Times:

  • August
  • September
  • October
