Sunlight:

  • Full Sun
  • Partial Sun

Soil Type:

  • Moist
  • Well-Drained
  • Dry

A hardy, native, perennial bunchgrass found across western North America that tolerates a wide range of conditions. It is known for its adaptability in environments from wet meadows to dry, rocky areas, and its resistance to drought and moderate foot traffic, making it useful for erosion control, native landscaping, and as a lawn alternative. The grass has soft, bluish-green foliage, is deer-resistant, and provides food for birds and butterflies.

Once established, California oatgrass requires little to no summer water, thriving in dry to moist conditions. Its deep, fibrous roots help it access subsurface moisture and stabilize soil, making it resilient in low-water environments.

Soil & Sunlight

Sun: Thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade or shade as well.

Soil: Prefers well-drained soils but can handle a range from dry to seasonally wet.

Plant Size

Height: The stems are typically between 30 and 100 cm (12-39 inches) tall, though they can reach nearly a meter (3 feet) in maximum height.

Spread: primarily through self-pollinated seeds that drop from its flowers, sometimes encouraged by the plant's spider-like seed stalks touching the soil.

Garden Design:

An excellent choice for xeriscaping due to its notable drought tolerance, low water needs once established, and adaptability to a wide range of soil and light conditions. This native, semi-evergreen perennial bunchgrass is a highly versatile and sustainable option for water-wise landscaping, matrix meadows, and hellstrip gardens.
