Bunchberry is a spreading, mounding groundcover with ribbed leaves and attractive white flowers in the spring. In the summer, bunches of glossy red berries appear.

Soil & Sunlight

Partial to full shade (avoid direct, intense afternoon sun, which can burn the foliage).

Bunchberry requires acidic to neutral soil that is rich in organic matter (humus or loam). It thrives in places with rotting wood or thick mulch.

Plant Size

Typically grows only 3–9 inches (8–22 cm) tall, and spreads via rhizomes to form colonies 12–18 inches wide.

Garden Design:

The foliage of Bunchberry turns a lovely bronze/red colour in late summer and early autumn for added seasonal interest. Great groundcover colony; could be used as a drift. Ideal for shaded, cool, and acidic garden spots.

Bloom Times:

  • May
  • June

Pollinator Support:
