Lewis Flax is a clump-forming perennial with wiry, grass-like leaves and stunning violet-blue flowers that bloom in the summer. Growing to 50 cm tall, Lewis flax is a very drought-tolerant and low-maintenance plant that thrives in poor soils. A fun fact bout this species: Flax is the plant used to make linen, and the seeds are edible (and very nutritious) once cooked!

Soil & Sunlight

Sun: Full Sun (6 to 8 hours a day) can tolerate partial shade (too much shade and may become floppy)

Soil: Well-drained sandy, loam, or rocky soil. Dry to medium moisture (It thrives in the dry, open conditions of western North America, including BC's dry meadows, open forests, prairies, and sandy hills.)

Plant Size

Height: 1 to 3 feet (30-91 cm)

Garden Design:

Can be used as a scatter plant (airy accent). Self-seeds, so if not deadhead, will begin to appear like a light 'drift' over time.

To encourage more blooms and prevent excessive self-seeding, cut back stems to the base after flowering.

Bloom Times:

  • June
  • July
  • August

Pollinator Support:

  • Bees
