Grows in rocky, alpine, and sub-alpine areas. It is a perennial with purple to blue-lavender flowers and is found from the southern part of the province down to California and Nevada, and is considered secure in B.C. The vibrant, tubular flowers are a pollinator magnet for hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies.

Soil: The soil must be well-draining to prevent root rot.
Texture: Loose, sandy, or gravelly soil is ideal. It can tolerate rocky substrates; does best in infertile soil; avoid overly rich soil.

Sun: Full sun (at least 6 hours a day)

Height: typically grows 2 to 5 inches tall

Spread: 12 to 24 inches wide, forming a low, mat-like shrub

Garden Design:

Great for rock gardens, raised beds or slopes; environments that mimic it's native rocky habitat, with excellent water drainage to prevent root rot. Once established, the plant is drought-tolerant, making it an excellent choice for water-wise or xeriscape designs.
