Soil Type:

  • Well-Drained

A highly versatile, evergreen groundcover that thrives in coastal gardens, rockeries, and as a sustainable "no-mow" lawn alternative. It spreads rapidly via runners to form a dense, glossy green mat that suppresses weeds and provides white flowers in spring followed by small edible, red fruit.

Soil & Sunlight

Well-drained, sandy, or gravelly soils with a pH between 5.8 and 7.8, often preferring sandy loam, rocky coastal bluffs, and dunes. It thrives in poor, medium-to-coarse textured soils, making it excellent for erosion control, while requiring full sun to part shade and showing high drought tolerance once established.

Plant Size

Low-growing, evergreen perennial ground cover, typically reaching 4–6 inches (10–15 cm) in height and spreading 2–3 feet (60–90 cm) or more via runners. It forms dense, mat-like colonies, making it excellent for erosion control or lawn replacement.

Garden Design:

A great groundcover, can be planted as a 4–6 inch tall carpet to fill in spaces between shrubs or in rocky, difficult-to-cultivate areas. Use along pathways or garden borders for a clean, attractive edge that produces small, edible red fruits in summer.

Coastal Strawberry's aggressive, fast-spreading nature and strong root system make them ideal for stabilizing slopes and sandy coastal dunes. They can be used in "lawn-style meadows" or "intentional" weedy lawns, offering higher biodiversity than traditional grass and tolerating moderate foot traffic.

Their cascading growth is also ideal for hanging baskets, planter boxes, and retaining walls, where they can trail over the edge.
